🏔️ The 5 Climate Zones of Mount Kilimanjaro

One of the most fascinating things about climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is that it’s like walking from the tropics to the Arctic — all in just a few days! As you ascend, you’ll pass through five very distinct climate zones:

1. 🌾 Cultivated Zone (1,000 – 1,800 m)

This is the lush farmland at the base of Kilimanjaro. You’ll see local villages, banana trees, and coffee plantations. It’s warm, green, and full of life.

2. 🌧️ Rainforest Zone (1,800 – 2,800 m)

Dense, misty, and vibrant with life. Expect tall trees, vines, moss, and the sounds of tropical birds and monkeys. It’s humid and can rain unexpectedly — a rain jacket is a must here.

3. 🌿 Moorland Zone (2,800 – 4,000 m)

Things begin to open up. Giant groundsels and other strange plants appear. The air gets cooler, and the clouds feel closer. This zone is otherworldly — a favorite for photographers!

4. 🏜️ Alpine Desert Zone (4,000 – 5,000 m)

Dry, windy, and vast. The landscape becomes rocky with little vegetation. Daytime is sunny, but temperatures drop sharply at night. It’s a dramatic shift in terrain and climate.

5. ❄️ Arctic Zone (Above 5,000 m)

This is the summit zone — cold, icy, and breathtaking. Oxygen is low, and it feels like another planet. Dress warmly and take it slow as you push toward Uhuru Peak.
