The Umbwe Route is one of the more challenging routes to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for its steep ascent and more demanding terrain, but it offers a rewarding and less-traveled path compared to some of the other routes.

  • Trek Duration:Ā Approximately 5-7 hours.
  • Altitude:Ā Start at 1,640 meters (5,381 feet); reach Umbwe Camp at 2,850 meters (9,350 feet).
  • Description:Ā Begin trekking from the Umbwe Gate through dense rainforest. The trail is steep and can be physically demanding.
  • Trek Duration:Ā Approximately 5-7 hours.
  • Altitude:Ā Barranco Camp at 3,960 meters (13,000 feet).
  • Description:Ā Ascend through the moorland zone and reach the Barranco Camp. This section includes a challenging climb of the Barranco Wall, which involves some scrambling.
  • Trek Duration:Ā Approximately 4-5 hours.
  • Altitude:Ā Karanga Valley at 4,000 meters (13,100 feet).
  • Description:Ā Trek across the alpine desert and descend into Karanga Valley. This day is crucial for acclimatization and preparing for the summit.
  • Trek Duration:Ā Approximately 4-5 hours.
  • Altitude:Ā Barafu Camp at 4,600 meters (15,100 feet).
  • Description:Ā Continue your ascent to Barafu Camp. This is your base camp for the summit attempt and where you’ll prepare for the final climb.

Trek Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak, then another 6-7 hours descending to Mweka Camp.
Altitude: Summit at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet); Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters (10,200 feet).
Description: Start the summit bid early in the morning (around midnight). After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka Camp. This is a long and strenuous day, with the challenge of reaching the summit and then descending to a lower camp.

  • Trek Duration:Ā Approximately 3-4 hours.
  • Altitude:Ā Mweka Gate at 1,640 meters (5,381 feet).
  • Description:Ā Complete the final descent to the Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
