7 Days | RONGAI ROUTE Itinerary

  • Simba Camp:Ā 2,625m
  • Details:Ā The track then starts consistently but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

  • Simba Camp:Ā 3,480m
  • Details:Ā The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant Scenarios near Kikelelwa Camp.

  • Details:Ā A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all-round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

  • Mawenzi Tarn Hut:Ā 4,310m
  • Details:Ā Cross the lunar desert of the ā€˜Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night.

  • Kibo Hut:Ā 4,700m
  • Details:Ā After breakfast we will be trekking west continuing to ascend east to Kibo across the saddle in between Mawenzi and Kibo reaching Kibo hut for the final preparations for the final summit.
  • Time (average):Ā 15 hours
  • Uhuru Peak:Ā 5,895m
  • Horombo Hut:Ā 3,720m
  • Details:Ā You’ll set off around midnight up a rocky trail to the Hans Meyer Cave and then to Gillman’s Point 5,685 m the rim of the main crater, where you will rest enjoying the sunrise over Mawenzi after which you’ll spend about 2 – 3 hours climbing in snow up to Uhuru Peak AKA the summit and the highest point in Africa! This is the most difficult day by far due to the combination of altitude and steepness of the climb, and this is where those who can’t make it usually turn back long before reaching Uhuru Peak. After spending time at the summit you’ll be heading down a few hours to Kibo Hut for a rest, and then down to Horombo for your last night on the mountain.

  • Marangu Gate:Ā 1,830m
  • Details:Ā Descend into the rainforest to Marangu gate successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. Transfer to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
